Mass. Maritime Track Teams Brave Last Remnants of Winter in Snowflake Classic

MEDFORD — The Massachusetts Maritime outdoor track & field team battled the elements for a second straight week of competition on Saturday afternoon at the appropriately named Tufts Snowflake Classic, as the Buccaneer men placed 15th of 22 teams that scored in the event while the women posted three top 12-finishes on the Dussault Track.

Massachusetts Maritime senior Zach Poh (Bridgewater) finished third in the men’s discus as he posted a mark of 38.78 meters. Fellow senior Sam Hill (Hopkinton, NH) placed 8th in the 110 meter high hurdles with a time of 17.44. The Buccaneer men’s 4 x 100 meter relay comprised of Hill, senior E.J. Bennett (East Wareham), sophomore Garrett Loughry (Edgewater, FL) and freshman Kevin O’Leary (Norton) finished second in the event with a time of 46.87 as part of a 15-point performance overall for Massachusetts Maritime.

Tufts took top team honors in the competition with 111.5 points to top runner-up Northeastern’s 100 points.

Massachusetts Maritime sophomore Emma Ethier (Norton) recorded a ninth place finish in the women’s triple jump (8.60 meters) for the Buccaneers. The Bucs also received 12th place individual performances from freshmen Malina Dang (Midlothian, VA) in the discus (24.70 meters) and Jessica Gratzer (Pembroke) in the javelin (26.82 meters). Tufts also took top honors in the women’s competition with a team score of 149 points, as the Jumbos topped runner-up Northeastern’s total of 96 points.

Massachusetts Maritime travels to North Dartmouth, Mass. next Saturday morning (April 4) to compete at the UMass Dartmouth Corsair Classic beginning at 11:00 am.
