St. John Paul II Devours Wareham Vikings; Badot Bats Barnstable Past Brockton

HYANNIS – Cape & Islands League kings St. John Paul II ran roughshod over the visiting Wareham High Vikings last night at John McKeon Park beneath the lights, 15-0, behind the pitching of Eric DelRosso and the heavy bat of senior slugger Kevin Marsh.

Marsh went 3-4 at the plate with three RBI and scored two runs to lead the 16-hit barrage against the visiting Vikes, while DelRosso scattered four hits and struck out seven in his complete-game shutout.

He also went 2-3 at the plate in his own cause with one RBI and scored twice.

Lions’ Amherst-bound shortstop Matt Santos added a pair of hits (2-2) and three RBI and scored three runs, while rightfielder Jonny Warden and first sacker Cole Campbell each added a pair of hits and combined for five RBI.

Santos had the sole big clout of the day for the hosts with an RBi-triple in a six-run third inning that gave DelRosso all he would need to take the victory.

The Lions (16-1) hit the road today for Bishop Stang for a 4:00 pm non-league tilt, then return to Hyannis Thursday to wrap up the regular season at McKeon Park, again, against Stang.

win of the season (4-0) as the Red Raiders (9-9) kept their postseason hopes alive with a 6-4 win at home against the Brockton Boxers (6-12).

Down 3-0 after the top of the first, Barnstable plated three runs of its own to tie it at 3-3 in the bottom of the first on basehits from Badot, Griffin Burke (2-4, 2 runs), Jack Kennedy (2-3, 2 RBI) and Gary DiSarcina Jr. (1-3, RBI).

After a scoreless second inning, Burke led off the third with his second hit of the day, followed by Kennedy’s second hit and then DiSarcina grounded out to drive in Burke to make it 4-3.

Holzman went four innings and struck out one while allowing just one earned run in the first. He gave up three hits and walked two. Junior Ryan Bruning came on in relief to start the fifth inning and struck out four in three innings of work while allowing one run in the seventh. He notched the save.

Barnstable added a pair of critical runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after Alex Mercado led off with a triple and came home on a Lukas Atsalis basehit up the middle with the Brockton infield drawn in. Atsalis stole second base and came home later on a Badot basehit to make it 6-3. The Brockton run in the seventh off of Bruning made it a 6-4 finale.

The Red Raiders need a win against Dartmouth or Sandwich in their last two regular-season games to clinch a postseason berth. Barnstable heads to Dartmouth for a make-up game tomorrow (Thursday) and then faces Sandwich at home on Saturday at 11:00 am.
