YARMOUTH – A man is dead after drowning in the pool at the Ambassador Inn and Suites in Yarmouth Sunday afternoon.
Police and firefighters were called to the Route 28 motel shortly before 2 p.m. after 82-year-old James Murphy of South Dennis was found at the bottom of the pool. Staff pulled Murphy from the pool and the manager performed CPR until rescue crews arrived.
Murphy was taken to Cape Cod Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
“A good Samaritan type guest observed something at the bottom of the pool, realized it was a person and notified everybody,” said Yarmouth Deputy Police Chief Steven Xiarhos. “We’re just disappointed that we were unable to revive him.”
Police describe Murphy as an avid swimmer who swam at the motel multiple times a week. It’s not known how long Murphy was submerged.
The incident is under investigation by Yarmouth detectives and the Massachusetts State Police.
This marks the fourth drowning incident at a Yarmouth motel in recent years. 3 people drowned at motels in town in 2014, two at the Bayside Resort and one at the Riverview Resort.
