WEST BARNSTABLE – Plans for a new Cape Cod Community College Nursing and Allied Health Program Clinical Teaching Laboratory and Learning Center is one step closer to reality thanks to a grant from the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank.
The bank announced a $250,000 five-year match challenge grant for the project, at a news conference at the West Barnstable campus on Tuesday.
Made through the Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank Charitable Foundation Trust, the funds must be matched to be received by the College.
“What we’re hoping the challenge will do is encourage other organizations in the community to similarly come out and support this project,” said Bank President and CEO Dorothy Savarese.
Funding for the $3.8 million project is at $1.9 million so far, with plans to open the new facility by September 1.
Those funds include a $1 million investment from Cape Cod Healthcare and local donors, but the college is conducting a fundraising campaign to raise the additional funds.
With an aim to educate and employ more nurses and medical professionals to take care of Cape Cod’s aging population, the new site will be around 5,200 square feet and feature an expanded teaching laboratory and classrooms.
“It’s a game changer for our students, our graduates, that will have good, solid careers in the community,” said College President Dr. John Cox.
Work on the facility will go out to bid soon, with the renovation of the North building’s ground level floor to make way for the new Teaching Laboratory and Learning Center.
“If you come back in September and you see the outcome of this investment, it will really shine a positive light on what we do in higher education at Cape Cod Community College,” said Cox.
Currently the college’s nursing program has 64 full-time students and 32 part-time evening students in its program.
