WOODS HOLE – The investigation continues into what caused an oil spill in Woods Hole over the weekend.
The Coast Guard and a number of other agencies were notified of the spill in Great Harbor on Sunday. Heavy sheen was found on the water by a Woods Hole resident.
Cleanup crews deployed 1,000 feet of containment and absorbent boom in the harbor to remove the oil and contain the spill. Officials collected samples from the water to try and get more information on the nature of the incident.
There was no information immediately available on how much oil may have spilled into the harbor.
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is assisting with the investigation.
Officials with the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game are also examining the death of at least 5 birds in the area. They will try to determine if the spill and the fatalities were connected.
