SANDWICH – A Sandwich police officer luckily escaped serious injury Monday evening after being dragged about 30 feet during a traffic stop. Police tell Cape Wide News that according to their police reports, during the traffic stop, the officers removed both the driver and passenger from the vehicle, suspecting possible alcohol impairment. Upon removing the operator, evidence of possible narcotics violations were observed in the vehicle. While the officer was attempting to detain the suspect, he broke away, and was able to get into the driver’s seat. The officer attempted to remove the suspect from the vehicle, at which time the suspect began to drive away. The officer was partially inside the vehicle and attempting to get him to stop. The officer after approximately 30 feet before the officer let go and landed in the roadway. The officer was uninjured. An attempt to locate the suspect was made by Plymouth and State Police. They subsequently located him at a residence in Plymouth where he was taken into custody. Trevon M. Souza, 20, of New Bedford was charged with possession of a Class B substance, operating to endanger (2 counts), marked lanes violation, operating after license suspended, failing to stop for police, failing to identify self to police officer, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer and assault and battery on a police officer with a dangerous weapon.
