MASHPEE – A sample of mosquitoes tested in Mashpee has been confirmed by the Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project to have Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
The sample was collected earlier this week at Great Hay Road.
The group also confirmed that another sample in Falmouth on Walker Street tested positive for EEE this week.
All Cape Cod towns are considered at low risk of EEE, but the state has determined that Bourne, Falmouth, Wellfleet and Truro are at moderate risk and Wareham is at critical risk.
So far this season, Massachusetts has had eight human cases of EEE.
There is a 50 percent mortality rate in Massachusetts with those who contract the virus and those who survive have lifelong neurological disabilities.
A 59 year old Fairhaven woman died last month after contracting EEE.
The Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project is urging everyone to take precautions and to wear mosquito repellent when going outdoors.
