ORLEANS – The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy captured dramatic video footage of a 9 foot female white shark breaching under Dr. Greg Skomal of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, working with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy.
Skomal was gathering underwater GoPro footage of the shark from the research vessel pulpit. This encounter took place off of Nauset Beach in Orleans on Monday, November 11, 2019.
This white shark was later tagged as part of the movement study and has been identified for the white shark catalog.
“While out on research trips, we’ve seen white sharks breach and we’ve received multiple reports of breaching white sharks in recent years from fishermen and boaters. While encounters like this one are rare, this video shows that they can occur,” the Conservancy said in an online post.
The group said the video is a good reminder of the importance of following safety tips and always staying vigilant when in or on the water
