NANTUCKET – Nantucket could join over 20 towns across the state that have been designated as Massachusetts Cultural Districts by the end of the year.
A cultural district is a specific geographical area in a community with a concentration of cultural facilities, activities and assets.
“The state does require us to plan it as a walkable area, so we’ve actually gone out and walked it,” said Nantucket Arts Council Executive Director Bill Ferrall.
Selectmen voted last month for the plan, teaming up with ReMain Nantucket, the Nantucket Arts Council, Artists Association of Nantucket, Nantucket Historical Association and Nantucket Atheneum.
“We will invite the Massachusetts Cultural Council to the island to do a site visit which we hope at this point will be in mid-October, and then we hope we will get a designation in time to celebrate and announce,” said Ferrall.
