BOSTON (AP) — Mayoral candidates across Massachusetts reported spending a total of $3.8 million on their campaigns last year.
That’s according to the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance, which looked at 61 candidates who ran for mayor in 36 cities.
The spending was down significantly from 2013. That year, which featured an open race for mayor of Boston, mayoral candidates across the state spent $8.8 million. There was no mayoral contest in Boston last year.
The most expensive 2015 race was in Quincy, where incumbent Democratic Mayor Thomas Koch faced former Democratic Mayor William Phelan. The two spent $861,000.
One record was broken in 2015 — the amount spent per vote.
Koch spent an average of $55.35 per vote. Everett Mayor Carlo DeMaria set the previous record of $54.33 in 2013.
