Teenager dead, two injured after boat crashes into jetty at entrance to Sesuit Harbor in Dennis

DENNIS – A 17-year-old girl was killed and two people were injured after a boat reportedly struck the west jetty at the entrance to Sesuit Harbor about 9 PM Friday. Rescuers responded by boat and ambulances responded to the Cold Storage Beach parking lot. It was unclear how many people were on the vessel but according to reports at least some of the people were ejected into the water on impact. The Cape Cod Tech Rescue Team dive unit was requested to respond to the scene to check for anyone that might still be in the water. A Coast Guard helicopter was also responding to the scene. About 11:30 PM, all divers were pulled from the water and operations were suspended. The Mass Environmental Police investigate all boating accidents.

From Mass State Police: The body of a 17-year-old girl was recovered deceased from the water by the USCG at approximately 11:30 PM. The death investigation is being conducted by the State Police Detective Unit for the Cape and Islands District, the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office, and Dennis Police with the assistance of the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.

From Cape & Islands District Attorney’s office: Cape & Islands District Attorney Robert J. Galibois announced today that at approximately 9:01 pm on July 21, 2023, the Dennis Police Department received a 911 call reporting that a boat crashed into a jetty in Sesuit Harbor in Dennis. Dennis Police then learned that a 17-year-old female occupant of the boat was unaccounted for. The body of the female was recovered by Dennis Fire-Rescue personnel and the regional dive team. The female was pronounced deceased at the scene. Out of respect for the privacy of her family, her identity is not being released. District Attorney Galibois extends his condolences to her family and friends.

Preliminary information received by investigators established that the vessel, a Regulator equipped with two outboard 250 horsepower engines bearing an Alabama registration, was occupied by 6 individuals including the deceased, at the time of the crash. The location of the crash was identified as the jetty by the channel leading to the Northside Marina in Sesuit Harbor. Other occupants of the boat were treated at the Cape Cod Hospital.

The crash is being investigated by Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office, the Massachusetts Environmental Police, Dennis Police Department, and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section.

On Saturday, Dover-Sherborn High School Principal John Smith identified the victim as 17-year-old Sadie Mauro. The senior was described as a rising Lacrosse star. Grief Counselors will be at the high school library on Monday from 10 AM to 12 PM.
