BREWSTER – The Brewster Fire Department announces its third annual Citizens Fire Academy beginning Wednesday, September 16, 2015. The nine-week program will meet each Wednesday evening at Brewster Fire Headquarters, 1657 Main Street from 6 to 9 p.m.
According to Brewster Fire Chief Robert Moran, academy participants will receive an inside view of the Brewster Fire Department. Each session will study a different aspect of the department ranging from department organization and operations, emergency medical services, fire suppression, motor vehicle extrication, fire prevention/investigation and technical rescue services. In addition, the group will obtain CPR and First Aid certification, visit the Barnstable County Fire Academy for fire extinguisher training and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Communications Center to become more familiar with the 911 and fire dispatch services used by the community.
The program is designed to ensure each participant acquires an in-depth understanding of the Brewster Fire Department and the professional emergency services provided to the community. Each week a new topic will be discussed in classroom settings and participants will also be involved in performing a series of hands-on activities taught by the men and women of Brewster Fire and staff at the Barnstable County Fire Academy.
Participants must be 18 years of age, live or work in the Town of Brewster and pass a CORI background check. To graduate, attendees must be present at seven of the nine scheduled sessions. There is no program fee. Applications are available at Fire Headquarters beginning Monday August 3, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Space is limited to 15 participants and the application deadline is Monday, August 24.
