SOUTH DENNIS – A front-loader garbage truck operated by Waste Management Inc. burst into flames shortly after 7 a.m. Friday on Center Street about 100 yards north of the intersection with Aunt Debby’s Lane. Reports at the scene indicate the driver heard a “bang” and saw flames shooting out from the side of the vehicle.
When firefighters arrived the truck was fully involved with propane burning from underneath the truck. A combination of water and foam was applied to the vehicle to extinguish the fire. A small hydraulic leak was contained with absorbent booms and pads. The DEP was notified of the event.
The driver David Knight was uninjured and Bucklers Towing of Hyannis, was called to handle the vehicle removal.
The cause of fire in under investigation but is not deemed suspicious.
Dennis Police, who posted this dramatic photo, closed Center Street in the area until the scene could be cleared.
The Dennis Fire Department terminated command at 9:16 a.m.
