Public response leads to arrest of Yarmouth shoplifting suspect

ID COMP2

YARMOUTH – The Yarmouth Police Department reports that on February 20, 2016, Yarmouth Patrol Officer Ryan Brule began a criminal investigation involving an unidentified male who was stealing from the Stop & Shop grocery store on Long Pond Drive in South Yarmouth.

Stop & Shop Loss Prevention reported that the suspect would repeatedly go into the store, find old receipts in the trash and then load a cart full of those items. He would then go to the front desk and ask for a cash refund.

Loss Prevention officials had approached the individual twice. Both times the suspect ran away, without getting the cash and leaving the cart full of items.

The suspect’s picture was captured on the Stop & Shop security camera system and released to the public through the media and other social policing tools such as Facebook and Twitter. (See original story here.) The public promptly responded and provided the identity of the suspect.

Yarmouth Police Department Detective Eric Nuss conducted a follow-up investigation that positively confirmed the suspect’s involvement. Nuss will be filing shoplifting and attempt to commit a crime charges against Marcus A. Bennett, 24, of West Yarmouth, (pictured above in surveillance shot and booking photo) in the Barnstable District Court on Tuesday.
