WEST BARNSTABLE – Cape Cod Community College’s Nursing program rebounded last year after subpar performance by students on the National Council Licensure Exam.
The Board of Registration in Nursing requested last summer that the college improve test scores after the first-time pass rate fell below 80 percent.
The college said 83 of 89 members of the 2018 graduating class, or 93 percent, passed the exam on the first try – a 24 percent increase from the previous year.
The school’s 2018 rate was also 5 percent higher than the national average.
“Our faculty members in our nursing department got to work,” said Patrick Stone, the college’s spokesman.
“It was a ton of people doing a ton of hard work in our nursing department to get those scores up to where we knew they really belonged, where they have historically have been and where we expect them to be.”
Significant changes in how graduates were prepared for the exam included personalized student academic and financial support and mentorship, and narrowing the gap between when students graduate and take the test.
Stone said the increased passing rates is also due to the talent of the program’s students.
“That is really something that the college takes a lot of pride in, and our community takes a lot of pride in, is the quality of the nurses that we educate here,” Stone said.
Stone said the college is thrilled that the turnaround of the passing rate was completed so quickly.
