AmeriCorps Cape Cod Members Sworn In at Superior Courthouse

[Not a valid template]BARNSTABLE – The 18^th group of AmeriCorps Cape Cod members were sworn in yesterday at the Barnstable Superior Courthouse.

The Barnstable County Commissioners swore in the 32 members who will serve the county by working 1,700 hours apiece over the next 11 months to address environmental and disaster-preparedness needs of Cape Cod.

Corps members will work on a wide range of projects that include shellfish propagation, herring run clearing, wildland fuel reduction, dolphin stranding response, coastal erosion control and invasive species removal.

“They strengthen the capacity for the towns in order to get the work that they need done,” said Julie Ferguson, the interim director of AmeriCorps Cape Cod. “They come together for disaster-preparedness and they work with the towns on those plans and they are out in the schools working with young children.”

The entire group will contribute more than 50,000 hours of service to Barnstable County communities worth over $1 million.

AmeriCorps Cape Cod members have served 758,010 hours since the program began in 1999 saving towns, state and federal agencies and non-profit organizations more than $21 million.
