Three Bays Stormwater Drainage Management Plan Unveiled

MARSTONS MILLS – Updates on the Three Bays Stormwater Management Project were presented to the public at Liberty Hall in Marstons Mills on Tuesday.

The project, which aims to improve water quality in area bays by installing green infrastructure stormwater systems, is being undertaken by the Horsley Witten Group.

“Tonight we’re here to talk about a stormwater management project in the three bays that APCC is working on with the Town of Barnstable,” said Association to Preserve Cape Cod Restoration Ecologist April Wobst.

“It’s a project aimed at improving water quality in the bays through installing what are called green infrastructure stormwater treatment systems. We’re trying to get some input from the public on some concept designs.”

Horsley Witten engineer Michelle West joined Wobst to lead the presentation.

With the construction of two treatment systems completing Phase One, the next phase consists of assessing sites for the installation of more sites.

“All of the three bays – Cotuit Bay, North Bay, West Bay, as well as Prince Cove and Horns Cove are all considered impaired for bacteria and nitrogen,” Wobst explained.

“So, we’re really aiming at removing more of those pollutants with these systems than you get with traditional treatment through the storm drains and catch basins.”

Over the course of five years and at a cost of $1.2 million, green infrastructure stormwater treatment systems will be installed. The treatment systems are designed to remove pollutants from rainwater and other runoff before it enters the bay.
