Barnstable Holding Community Resiliency by Design Workshop Monday

BARNSTABLE – The Town of Barnstable Planning & Development Department and Planning Board is hosting a workshop Monday evening to gather community input on the town’s Community by Design Project.

The Community by Design project is a joint initiative to develop compact model housing designs that are appropriate for the distinct characteristics of the neighborhood while also serving the housing needs of the community.

“We are trying to identify preferred housing types of residents who live in the neighborhood. We know that we need additional housing and we know that’s going to take providing some density in our neighborhoods,” Barnstable Housing Coordinator Arden Russel-Cadrin explained.

“We want to know what that might look like and what might fit best in the existing neighborhoods based on design and scale and the community’s input.”

The Union Studios design team will be gathering ideas from the community on preferences for building forms, scale, height and styles at the workshop with guidance on the development of local implementation tools.

The study area is focused on the potential to develop in neighborhoods located in the East End of Hyannis, what Russel-Cadrin says is “from about east of Center Street to about the Yarmouth line, and then South Street up to Route 28.”

“Our target (audience for the meeting) is the residents of Hyannis, specifically the East End. They know their stock well enough and they know their neighborhood, but as I’ve said, I think it can translate to all of Hyannis,” Cadrin said.

The workshop is scheduled for 5:30 PM in the Hearing Room at Barnstable Town Hall.
