Barnstable PD Officer Charged with OUI

Barnstable Police LogoHYANNIS – A Barnstable police officer was arraigned today in Barnstable District Court on a drunk driving charge.

Matthew Bulman, 37, of Centerville, was found asleep at the wheel Sunday night while off duty around 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Cape Mart on Center Street in Hyannis.

Police were called to the Cape Mart for a reported motor vehicle accident but instead found officer Bulman asleep, according to Barnstable Police Chief Paul MacDonald.

MacDonald said officers did review surveillance from the store.

“It clearly shows officer Bulman drive into the parking lot, going into the store, making a purchase and then going back out to the car where he sits down and apparently falls asleep or passes out,” said MacDonald.

Bulman, who has been with the department for 3 and a half years, was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and operating a motor vehicle without headlights.

Bulman has been placed on paid administrative leave and will be assigned to the Barnstable police facility, according to MacDonald.

A pre-trial hearing has been scheduled for May 6.
