BREWSTER – The annual Big Fix event is going to Brewster this year.
On September 17, volunteers with Housing Assistance Corporation will travel to Brewster to do repairs on homes and landscape for seniors, the disabled and veterans that cannot afford it.
Over 1,000 volunteers have worked on 74 homes from Bourne to Dennis since the event began in 2010.
Brewster will be the furthest Cape town that the event has traveled to.
“We visit every home of every person that submits an application to talk to them specifically about what their needs are and then we marry our two lists, the applicants and the volunteers together,” said HAC Director of Housing Development Kate Ferreira in a presentation to Brewster Selectmen recently.
Last year’s fix was in Bourne, where 12 homes received a variety of repairs in about three hours.
HAC is looking for people to sign up as volunteers for the event.
Tasks include weeding, cleaning gutters, basic home repairs and moving heavy items to and from storage.
Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to contact HAC at 508-771-5400.
Homeowners interested in having their home be a part of this year’s event, can pick up applications at Brewster Town Hall and at the Council on Aging.
“There is a real change for the homeowners that accept the service, they’re happy to have these things done, but the real reward happens to be for the volunteers,” said Ferreira. “You would be really surprised at how much satisfaction comes from helping other people for no other reason than you can give a few hours.”
