SANDWICH – The community will walk along the Cape Cod Canal Sunday to show support towards helping individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias and those who care for them.

The HopeHealth Walk for Alzheimer’s benefits Hope Dementia & Alzheimer’s Services which provides information, education and support for caregivers and the family of those effected.

“The funds raised from this particular event go toward helping the families and friends in our community who are traveling that long and arduous road that is Alzheimer’s disease,” said Julie Dalton, the development officer for HopeHealth.

Programs provided by the agency include a telephone helpline, an assessment for caregiver and family counseling, development of care management plans, family support and counseling, support groups, respite grants, memory screenings and referrals.

The agency also provides professional services including dementia certification and ongoing education and an annual professional conference focusing on current trends in dementia care education.

“This is a journey that no caregiver can walk alone,” said Suzanne Faith, the senior director of Hope Dementia & Alzheimer’s Services.

“It’s a long journey that requires a lot of skill.”

The three-mile walk begins and ends at DCR Scusset State Beach in Sagamore Beach.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the walk starting at 10.

“It’s not really about the three-mile walk in so much as the show of solidarity toward helping the family and the community with this particular event,” Dalton said.

The event is the principal fundraiser for Hope Dementia & Alzheimer’s Services.

“All our services are free of charge because we walk on Sunday, May 6,” Faith said.

Participants can also register online at hopehealthma.org.

As of Tuesday afternoon more than $93,000 has been raised through the event, which is 46 percent of its goal total.
