Cape and Islands Voters to Choose Candidates in Several Primary Contests

HYANNIS – Voters will head to the polls Thursday across the Cape and Island to pick candidates in several contested primary races.

For Cape and Islands State Senate, Democrats Julian Cyr and Sheila Lyons are vying for their party’s nomination.

On the Republican side, Anthony Schiavi and Jim Crocker compete against each other.

Senator Dan Wolf (D) is not running for re-election.

In the 2^nd Barnstable State Representative District, Democrats Margeaux Weber and Aaron Kanzer are running against each other.

The winner of that race will face Republican Will Crocker, who is running unopposed. Brian Mannal is not running for re-election.

Matt Patrick and Michael Blanton are running for the Democratic nomination in the 3^rd Barnstable State Representative District. The winner will face incumbent Republican David Vieira.

In the race for the Barnstable/Dukes/Nantucket State Representative seat, five Democrats are running to replace Tim Madden, who is not running for re-election.

They include Dylan Fernandes, Michael Heylin, T. Ewell Hopkins, Jessica Lambert and Timothy Soverino.

There are no Republicans running for the seat.

In the race for Barnstable County Commissioner, Mary Pat Flynn, Mark Forest, Linda Bond and Ron Beaty are running in the primary.

On Martha’s Vineyard, Democrats Robert Ogden and Marc Richard Rivers are running for sheriff.

In the 9^th Congressional District, Republicans Mark Alliegro and Tom O’Malley are competing for the right to take on Democratic incumbent William Keating.

Incumbents running unopposed on Cape Cod this year include 5^th Barnstable State Representative Randy Hunt (R), 1^st Barnstable State Representative Tim Whelan (R), 4^th Barnstable State Representative Sarah Peake (D) and Plymouth Barnstable State Senator Vinny deMacedo (R).

Polls are open across the state until 8 p.m.

Secretary of State William Galvin is expecting a low turnout statewide, but said numbers will be much higher on the Cape and Islands, where there are many contested races.

Turnout in Dennis was hovering just under 18% at 7 p.m. Other Cape Cod towns were reporting similar turnout.
