Cape Organizations Stressing Safety During Bay State Bike Week

bike weekBARNSTABLE – State officials are making an effort this week to promote the use of bicycles as an alternative form of transportation.

Bay State Bike Week kicked off over the weekend and lasts through this Sunday.

The Cape Cod Commission and the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority are joining together to hold local activities during the week.

A series of bike safety events will be held across the Cape throughout the week.

“We try to educate people during this week about safe biking on Cape Cod,” Cannon said. “Sometimes we have small prizes for people including bike lights and t-shirts, things of that nature.”

The first of these promotion events will be held Monday at the Cape Cod Rail Trail at Route 134 in Dennis. A similar event will be held in Bourne Tuesday at the Cape Cod Canal Bike Path, adjacent to the Buzzards Bay Train Station. The last safety promotion event will be Wednesday in Orleans at the Cape Cod Rail Trail at Main Street.

All three events will start at 4 p.m.

A Hyannis Biker Breakfast will also be held on Friday from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Hyannis Village Green.

Maps, schedules and light refreshments will be available, along with free bike adjustments by Sea Sports Cyclery & Outdoors. Bike Week lights, bags and other giveaways will also be available.

A full calendar of Bike Week events can be found at baystatebikeweek.org/events.
