Wellfleet Bay Offers a Chance to Tag Horseshoe Crabs

Horseshoe crab populations have been diminishing in Wellfleet.

ORLEANS – The Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is looking to learn more about horseshoe crabs and is offering the public a chance to help tag the marine creatures.

The tagging event will be held today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Priscilla Landing in Orleans.

Attendees will observe the crabs as they come up on the beach to spawn at high tide.

Researchers will discuss their behavior, biology, conservation and management as they are tagged and counted.

Participants will learn how to use the drill, tags and calipers along with getting an up close look at the horseshoe crabs.

The program is for adults and children 8 and older.

Attendees are asked to wear closed-toed and closed heel shoes. They should also bring gear to protect from the sun.

The cost is $11 and $9 for members.
