Community Action Committee Presents Hero Award

HYANNIS – The Community Action Committee of Cape Cod and the Islands recently presented its Hero Award to Judy Scarafile.

Scarafile was choosen as the second recipient of the award for her work through St. Mary’s Episcopal Church to build the committee’s Turkey’s for Cape Codders Program.

The program distributes turkey baskets with all the fixings to local families in need for Thanksgiving.

Scarafile led the effort to have St. Mary’s sponsor the program nine years ago. Since then, the church’s parishioners have been responsible for 85 percent of the donations that support the effort and 50 percent of the volunteers who assist with distributing turkey baskets.

Former executive director of the Cape Cod Commission Paul Niedzwiecki was the first recipient of the Hero Award which was established in 2016.

The committee’s board decided at that time that the award would only be presented when an individual involved with the organization’s programs had risen above all others by demonstrating exceptional leadership, dedication and the ability to motivate and inspire.

The award was presented to Scarafile during the organization’s recent Volunteers and Legacy Donors luncheon.
