Hundreds turned out to celebrate the Cobb Astro Park at Barnstable High School, an 11-year project made possible by scores of volunteers and donations.

HYANNIS – When Barnstable High School Principal Patrick Clark was a student at Barnstable High, the courtyard in the center of the school was a weed-filled blighted space.

“Definitely transformed since I was here. It was basically kind of a weedy mess. And if you had a free period you could come to the library and maybe come sit out here but it wasn’t even a place that you wanted to be. So in the late 1980s and even through the 1990s, it was nothing special,” he said.

But last night, in front of hundreds of locals, the Cobb Astro Park received its grand unveiling with student led tours and commentary highlighting elements that include an observatory for astronomy students, sculptures that highlight great innovators of the ages, murals and gardens, all put together through the efforts of volunteers and donations.

“It’s absolutely awesome. And to see the turn out for the people who are friends of the school here tonight is just a reminder of the strong community that we have here in Barnstable,” Clark said.
