D-Y Schools to Create Fund for Unused Transportation Funds

schoolbusYARMOUTH – The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School Committee recently voted to establish a regional transportation reimbursement fund.

Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School Committee Chairman Brian Carey said transportation money that is not spent will be carried over into the fund for the next year.

“Our reimbursement from the state continually goes down,” he said. “If we can save money in a year through consolidating bus routes or whatever it might be then we would put it into this stabilization fund.”

Carey said the money that is saved would not continually carry over.

“They would only be there for one year,” he said. “If it doesn’t get spent in the year after then it goes back into what we call the [Excess and Deficiency Fund] but municipalities call it their free cash.”

The state passed a law last November that allows regional school districts to establish reserve funds for transportation money that is not spent.

Carey said the district will continue to push legislators to get full reimbursement from the state.

“It certainly doesn’t fall on deaf ears with the elected officials who represent the Cape districts, but it tends to fall on deaf ears once we get over the bridge,” he said. “And those who have don’t want to give to those who don’t.”
