Democrat Announces Challenge to Brewster State Rep. Whelan

HYANNIS – There is a new candidate in the race for state representative in the 1st Barnstable District.

Democrat Joshua Mason, a 36-year-old from Dennis, will try to unseat Representative Timothy Whelan, a Republican.

He promises to be a candidate of the people.  “My campaign is going to be a campaign by community.  I want people’s input, suggestions, criticisms, and I’m going to heavily rely on feedback from people out there,” he said.

Although he has worked on presidential campaigns for nearly 2 decades, this is his first time being a candidate.

Two of Mason’s top priorities are tackling the opioid crisis and subsiding the affordable housing shortage.

He also wants to help the Cape’s businesses and overall economy grow substantially.  “I want to create that environment where we don’t really have an off-season, it just turns into winter time.  You look at it from a state level and we’re still only seen as a six month out of the year community and not a twelve.  Meanwhile we’ve got a quarter of a million people who live here year-round,” he said.

The district includes Dennis, five precincts in Yarmouth, two in Brewster and one in Barnstable.
