Dennis Selectmen Against DeRregionalizing Middle Schools

DENNIS – Selectmen in Dennis recently voted against de-regionalizing the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District for grades 4 through 7.

The idea was floated at a meeting of a committee made up of officials from both towns that is working on altering the regional agreement.

“We have had consultants tell us that it would be more expensive for both towns to de-regionalize,” said Cleon Turner, a Dennis Selectman and a member on the committee.

“It just doesn’t make sense to keep talking about it.”

Turner believes the de-regionalization discussion is taking time away from the work to amend the regional agreement and figure out what to do with the middle schools in both towns.

Selectman Sheryl McMahon said she was part of a town committee that studied de-regionalization.

“Although it was feasible, it was going to be very expensive,” she said.

“We primarily focused just on the Dennis side and I understand Yarmouth has done this and took it off the table.”

Consultants have recommended the district merge both the Mattacheese and Wixon middle schools in Yarmouth and Dennis, respectively.
