YARMOUTH – Hundreds gathered at the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School on Saturday to run the Dolphin Dash and celebrate the district’s sports.
By attending, participants raised money to subsidize part of the $100-per-student sports fee which families are charged if their students join a team.
Though that price is capped at $200 per-year for each family, Dennis Selectman John Terrio said it can be too much.
“We have a wide and diverse face who come to D-Y and $200 dollars is a lot of money to some families,” he said. “We won’t pay for it all this year, but maybe someday we will, and today was a great start.”
The idea for a yearly fundraiser to offset those costs came to D-Y athletic director Dr. Paul Funk, who accredited the fees to increases in sporting equipment and uniform costs.
A pasta dinner was held for runners the night before the race and was included in the price of admission.
School officials said that they hoped to raise around $30,000. Terrio said he hopes it will continue for years to come.
