Doug to Make Beach Day Prediction at Annual Quahog Day Event

NORTH FALMOUTH – Cape Cod’s famous weather prognosticator, Doug the Quahog, will make his annual trip to land today to offer his summer beach forecast.

Doug will predict how many days of sunshine there will be this summer at the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce summer kickoff event – Quahog Day.

Quahog Day is Cape Cod’s version of Groundhog Day, and will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 21 at Sea Crest Beach Hotel in North Falmouth.

“It’s sort of our answer to Punxsutawney Phil, in a way,” said Kristen Mitchell Hughes, the chamber’s vice president of marketing.

Doug the Quahog will be escorted to the “Prognostication Ceremony” by a large security detail equipped with clamming rakes. He will then whisper his prediction to his human sidekick, Captain Johnny Quahog, of the Quahog Republic.

“He is the official Quahog whisperer and as far as we know the only person who can speak Quahogese,” said Mitchell Hughes.

Doug’s track record speaks for itself. Last year he predicted 67 days of beach weather.

“He really nailed it,” Mitchell Hughes said. “A review of our weather logs at our visitor center for summer 2018 showed that the region actually experienced over 67 beach days from the first day of summer all the way through Columbus Day weekend.”

Captain Johnny Quahog, also known as Erik Bevans, said Doug has only been off once in ten years.

“I just have to tell you, Doug was in a real bad way that year and we all have an off year,” Bevans said. “You can’t really hold him to the fire for that, or hold him to the fry-o-lator I guess is a better way to say it.”

Mitchell Hughes said everyone is hoping for some good news from Doug this year after all the rain the region saw this spring.

“Otherwise, he could end up on someone’s dinner plate. That’s for sure,” she said.

Mitchell Hughes said the event has really become a fun tradition for Cape Cod.

“Some people come from as far away as Pennsylvania every year, New Jersey, all over New England just to hear what Doug is going to say,” she said.

Bevans said the event gets bigger and bigger every year.

“Last year we did it down at the Pilot House in Sandwich and it was by far the best one we have done yet,” Bevans said. “I bet this year at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel down in Falmouth is going to be nothing short of the best one we have ever done.”

This year’s event will feature Boston 25 Morning News Anchor Gene Lavanchy as the special guest emcee.
