Flu Continues to be Widespread Across Cape and Islands

HYANNIS – Flu season does not seem to be slowing down.

Similar to the rest of the state and the county, influenza cases continue to be widespread in Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket counties, according to a recent advisory from the state Department of Public Health.

Individuals with chronic illness, seniors, pregnant women and children are most vulnerable.

The best prevention methods are getting vaccinated, washing hands frequently, and staying away from crowds and others who are sick.

Cape Cod Healthcare, which operates Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis and Falmouth Hospital, says it is prepared and has the necessary resources to adequately treat all patients.

The flu usually has an abrupt onset and symptoms include fever, sore throat, cough and muscle aches and pains. Colds on the other hand, come on gradually and may have a combination of symptoms, such as a stuffy nose, runny nose and watery eyes, and/or coughing and sneezing.

Cape Cod Healthcare recommends treating symptoms at home with plenty of rest, fluids and medication for fever and achiness. Individuals who feel they have the flu should contact their primary care physician as soon as possible, as some medications can lessen the severity and duration of the illeness.

If a fever does not respond to treatment, breathing symptoms get worse after about 2 days and fluids cannot be retained, individuals with the flu should seek further treatment.

Who is most at risk from the flu, and what is the best way to protect them?

People with chronic illnesses, older adults, pregnant women and young children are most
vulnerable. To protect them you should:
 Get vaccinated
 Have everyone in the household get vaccinated
 Wash your hands and wash their hands
 Practice safe “cough etiquette” (coughing into your elbow or tissues)
 Keep them away from crowds and people who may be sick
 Continue to manage their health so they can be their healthiest at all times.
