HARWICH – A former Harwich Mariners standout has made national headlines for the Christmas gift of a lifetime.

Pavin Smith, a first round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks, used part of his signing bonus to pay off his parents mortgage.

Smith tweeted a video of his emotional parents reading a heartfelt letter he wrote to them explaining that he had paid off their house.

“Because of all the sacrifices you made to get me where I am, I want our family home to be yours,” the former Harwich first baseman wrote.

Smith was one of the best players in the Cape League in 2016, hitting .318 with 4 home runs for the Harwich Mariners. He was one of 10 Cape Leaguers taken in the first round of the 2017 MLB Draft when he was taken 7th overall by Arizona.

He received a more than $5 million signing bonus after he was drafted.

Smith had a successful first season in professional baseball, hitting .318 with 27 RBI in 42 games for the Single-A Hillsboro Hops in Oregon. Baseball America recently ranked him as the third-best prospect in the Diamondbacks minor league system.

Smith played his college ball at the University of Virginia.
