Gosnold Continues Search for Expansion Location

FALMOUTH – After scrapping a controversial plan to place a new drug detox facility near the Morse Pond School in Falmouth, Gosnold is searching for a new location.

The non-profit wanted to add 19 acute detox beds and 30 dual diagnosis beds in an expanded facility on Jones Road but many parents and residents were concerned that it posed a security risk for students.

Gosnold CEO Richard Curcuru says they are still committed to the expansion of services.

“We are looking both in Falmouth and outside of Falmouth but we would prefer to be in Falmouth as we have been there almost 46 years,” Curcuru said.

The non-profit which provides addiction and mental health treatment was founded in 1972.

Curcuru said the demand for beds far exceeds availability and that patients are being turned away every day. 

“We believe this is very necessary for our fight against this opioid crisis and believe in treating the mental health disorder population,” he said.

Gosnold is seeking options that include renovating an existing facility or purchasing land and constructing a new structure.

“We’d love to stay in the town,” Curcuru said. “We love the town and the residents are supportive of us being there.”

Curcuru said the cost of a new construction and the price of land could be too expensive and that a renovation is more likely.

Gosnold had plans to open the Jones Road facility by the Spring of 2019 before they decided to find a new location.

There is no current timetable for a new expansion project.

Along with expanding the number of detox beds, a new larger facility would allow the non-profit to open dual diagnosis beds to treat individuals with both addiction and mental health issues at the same time.

“Some people use substances as a way to treat their mental illness and some people begin using drugs and alcohol because of their mental illness,” Curcuru said. “We are committed and we know that the best way to treat a dual diagnosis is to treat both disorders at the same time and this unit and these beds will help us do that.”
