SOUTH YARMOUTH – The Friends of Bass River has added the newest member of its research team.
The organization has hired Kathleen Mason as the organization’s first Resident Graduate Research Associate.
Mason is a recent graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where she majored in environmental studies. She has spent numerous summers working in water quality monitoring and watershed management. This past summer she was in charge of a critical bacteria monitoring program with the Association to Preserve Cape Cod.
During her senior year at Colby College, Mason researched the nitrification of soil on an organic rice farm in Maine and contributed to salt marsh resiliency research at the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Most recently, Mason finished an internship with Highstead Foundation in Connecticut where she assisted in strategic conservation planning and was able to help in the advancement of the regional partnership’s land conservation goals across New England.
Mason is currently applying to graduate programs for a master’s in environmental science and management. At Friends of Bass River, she hopes to continue gaining more experience in nonprofits focused on coastal resiliency.
Mason will be advancing three key projects for FOBR:
-The science program with Dennis-Yarmouth High School that will be bringing students to the river for research and study;
-The planned educational event for community and members targeted in mid-May.
-Helping to advance FOBR’s goal of forming an environmental collaborative of all 11 organizations supporting at-risk waterways on Cape Cod.
She begins with FOBR on January 21.
