Cape Cod Mall Pushes for New Signs

HYANNIS – The Cape Cod Mall is moving forward with plans to update their look through revamped signage.

Representatives of the Simon Property Group recently appeared before the Town of Barnstable’s Panning Board to replace what they called an outdated ordinance governing signage at the mall.

The policy has not been revisited in a significant way in more than two decades, when the facility underwent a major expansion and redevelopment.

Mall officials are hoping that allowing and additional six to eight back-lit exterior wall signs will reflect the malls “retenanting” and allow smaller retailers increased exposure.

Simon attorney Michael Ford explained that a change in this policy is crucial to the mall’s future growth.

“As the mall is retenanted and there are additional small stores,” he explained.

“Those small stores are seeking more of the public entrances so that they’re not simply interior stores and that has caused the need for additional wall signage.”

The proposal would also allow the mall to replace three free-standing pilon signs with new, slightly larger versions.

Following the presentation, the mall’s plan received the unanimous of the planning board and will now move forward to the Barnstable Town Council for final approval.
