MEMA Issues Weather Update

slushBARNSTABLE – The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency is warning about icy conditions tonight.

While snow is falling in most of the state, the Cape and Islands is seeing rain, with mixed precipitation occurring over southern Bristol and southern Plymouth counties.

Winds will gust 35 to 50 mph along the coast and in eastern Massachusetts.

Forecasters are predicting rain and freezing rain on the Cape and Islands late morning into the afternoon, but transitioning back to all snow before winding down tonight.

Generally, an average of 6” to 10” of snow is expected in southeastern Massachusetts. In the areas that receive freezing rain and/or rain, a small amount of ice accretion is expected, but will not be significant enough to cause downed limbs, trees or wires.

MEMA officials say temperatures will fall drastically tonight, leaving the potential for flash freezing across the Cape and Islands.

Wind chills values tonight into Tuesday in southeastern Massachusetts will be -14 to -6 on the Cape, and -5 to 5 on the outer Cape and Islands.

Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for the entire Commonwealth except Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard until 1 AM Tuesday.

A Winter Storm Warning is posted when the forecast calls for at least 6 inches of snow in a 12 hour period, or 8 inches of snow in a 24-hour period.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket until 1 AM Tuesday.

A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for the South Shore until noon today for pockets of minor coastal flooding and splashover.

MEMA is reporting there is little to no concern for power outages with this storm and there is no concern for wind damage or significant coastal flooding with this storm.
