NANTUCKET – Nantucket residents will vote on three articles regarding the installation of a municipal sewer system in Madaket at the October 17 Special Town Meeting.
Those include the approval of $78 million to sewer the west-end village and some mid-island neighborhoods, and a citizen’s petition to postpone the vote on the project until the April 2017 Annual Town Meeting.
“There’s been many requests any many suggestions from these various experts saying that we need to sewer Madaket,” said Nantucket Health Director Roberto Santamaria. “It is the most important part of protecting the groundwater there.”
Scientists have identified nitrogen from leaching septic tanks as one of the three major contributors to diminishing water quality in Nantucket’s waters.
“Madaket sewers is extremely important to prevent nitrogen pollution to the groundwater,” said Santamaria. “What people don’t realize is that it’s not just nitrogen that gets into the groundwater, it’s aldehydes, it’s benzenes, everything from dishwashers to antibiotics.”
