HYANNIS – National Grid crews are continuing to fix a gas leak on South Street in Hyannis.

Barnstable Town Hall was briefly evacuated this morning around 10 a.m. after Hyannis fire crews detected significant levels of gas in the air.

National Grid crews were notified immediately and the road was closed, according to Hyannis Fire Lieutenant Thomas Lanman.

The National Grid crews found the leak in a gas main and repairs are expected to be completed sometime this evening, according to company spokesman Jake Navarro.

The road had one lane reopened quickly and traffic is still being diverted around the work crews between Pearl Street and Ocean Street.
