Nauset Beach Off-Road Trails Open Under HCP Program

NAUSET- The Town of Orleans Natural Resources Department has officially implemented the Habitat Conservation Program for the off-road trails south of the Nauset Beach public parking lot.

Similar to last year’s HCP, vehicles will only be allowed access/egress to Nauset Beach South during specified access windows.

The access windows are as follows: 8am-10am, 12pm-2pm, and 4pm-6pm.

All oversand vehicles, with the exception of self-contained, are expected to be off the beach by 5:30pm, with no egress through the self-escort zones being allowed after 6pm.

All oversand vehicles will be required to have a passenger over the age of 16 to walk in front of the vehicle in the specified self-escort zones. This is a mandatory requirement with a zero tolerance policy.

The trail layouts are as follows:

Trail 1 is open with 1/4 mile with no through access to the North and South.

Trail 2 is closed.

Trail 3 is open with 1/3 mile with no through access to the North and South.

Trail 4 is open with 1/4 mile with no through access to the North and South.

Trail 5 is open with 1/2 mile with no through access to the North and South.

All beach and trails south of Trail 5 are closed due to the presence of unfledged shorebirds.

At this time, Trails 1 and 5 are most conducive for self-contained campers.

Officials warn that anyone who fails to follow the HCP Procedures and Conditions will be subject to sticker revocation.

For more information on the policy you can visit the HCP section on the Town of Orleans’ website.
