Nauset Spit in Orleans Closed Due to Plover Nest

ORLEANS – Nauset Spit in Orleans is closed to over sand vehicles for the next 30 to 35 days because of a piping plover nest.

The nest is located close to the entrance to the vehicle trail.

Officials say that the proactive steps the town has taken could allow for self-escorted vehicles through the area as early as July 15.

Piping plover nests have forced the closure of the south side of Nauset beach since June 7.

There are over 17 piping plover nests on both sides of the beach that town staff is watching currently.
