WELLFLEET – A new opera company will debut on Cape Cod with two performances next month.
The Opera Theater of Cape Cod will premiere with “The Tragedy of Carmen on September 7 in Wellfleet and September 9 in Cotuit.
The performance is a modern spin on the renowned tale of seduction, obsession and tragedy. It explores the intense romance between Carmen, a powerful woman who has risen through the ranks of the criminal underworld, and Don Jose, a soldier who leaves his military post and hometown sweetheart to be with Carmen.
His passion for Carmen turns to violence when she falls for a handsome bullfighter.
The show contains adult themes and is recommended for mature audiences.
The Wellfleet performance is at Preservation Hall on September 7 at 7:30 p.m. The Cotuit show is at Cotuit Center for the Arts on September 9 at 2 p.m.
