OpenCape to Provide Main Street in Falmouth With Fiber Optic Connection

FALMOUTH – Businesses located on Main Street in Falmouth can look forward to getting faster internet soon.

The Falmouth Economic Development and Industrial Corporation said it’s dedicated to its OpenCape project to provide Main Street businesses with fiber optic networks, giving business owners faster internet connection than traditional cable lines.

With the ever-increasing importance of internet capabilities in the workplace, the goal is to supply these business owners with faster internet connection without the additional costs.

“The Falmouth EDIC reached out to us and the Chamber of Commerce and said that small businesses were coming to them and saying, ‘When the summertime comes there’s such an explosion of people, that we can’t get connectivity reliable enough to process credit cards.’ That’s a fairly low threshold,” OpenCape CEO Steve Johnston explained.

“So, we’re responding to that direct ask by connecting the rest of Main Street and offering those businesses along Main Street in Falmouth, whether it’s the eastern part of Main Street or the western part of Main Street, a ultra-reliable shared gigabit of service for approximately $100 per month. That would be a huge game changer for small businesses.”

The fiber optic network of the region is overseen and owned by OpenCape. The nonprofit connects Cape towns and serves 21 municipal buildings in Falmouth.

“Falmouth is one of the communities where we’ve done a lot of work,” Johnston said.

“We’re connecting the schools, and we’ve got a fair amount of fiber running around Falmouth. The one area in Falmouth where we didn’t have fiber was on that Main Street in Falmouth, downtown and sort of on that western part of Main Street.”

Businesses will connect to the main fiber optic line running down Main Street with telephone poles. Verizon and Eversource will provide additional service lines for the connection.
