Orleans Special Town Meeting to Address Marijuana Issues

ORLEANS -Voters in Orleans are set to take on a host of issues at Town Meeting tonight, among them are three Articles about the sale and use of recreational marijuana.

Two items proposed by the Planning Board would limit the location of recreational pot shops to specific zones in town; a Citizens Petition calls for the outright ban of non-medicinal marijuana sales in Orleans. Under the Planning Board proposals, retail shops would also need a special permit that would need to be renewed every three years and limit the number of retail operations to three.

A full scale ban of recreational material failed to garner enough votes at May Town Meeting but organizers of the new proposal say support has been strong for the ban. The ban requires a simple majority to pass, the zoning requirements must be passed by a two thirds majority.

Also on the ballot is a $1.2 million dollar bond to construct a dune to protect Nauset Beach facilities and parking and $713,000 to pay for asbestos cleanup at the Tri Town Septage Treatment Facility.
