Over $600K Raised at 17th Annual Seaside LeMans Held at Mashpee Commons

MASHPEE – Thousands of people gathered at Mashpee Commons on Saturday to watch dozens of local companies compete on a Formula 1 go-kart track to raise money for five non-profit organizations.

The 17th Annual Seaside LeMans race raised more than $600,000 for the organizations.

Those organizations include Cape Cod Hospital, the Lower Cape Outreach Council, Special Olympics Massachusetts, the Cape Cod and Islands Major Crisis Relief Fund and Mass Audubon Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary.

“For these beneficiaries, this is a huge influx of money for their budgets and The Davenport Companies and all the sponsors are so proud to support great organizations on Cape Cod,” said Seaside LeMans Race Director Kelsey Ellis.

The total money raised since the event’s inception in 2001 is over $6 million.

“We’re very happy for everyone to be here and to support a great cause,” said Ellis.

The festivities began with the Cape Cod Healthcare race in the morning, which included a team from Cape Cod Broadcasting Media.

Opening ceremonies began at 11:30, which included comments from race grand marshal and U.S. Congressman Bill Keating, a ceremony with an honor guard, a flyover and live music from the Cape Conservatory Jazz Band.

At noon, the drivers hit the pedal to the medal in the four-hour endurance race on the quarter mile track around Mashpee Commons.

At the end, an awards ceremony was held to honor the beneficiaries and reward the winners and finalists of the race.

Next week, organizers will start planning for the 2018 event, looking at what to improve on the race and deciding who the beneficiaries will be.
