HARWICH – An ad hoc parking committee has scrapped an idea of using the former fire station property on Bank Street for expanded employee parking in Harwich Port.
During a recent presentation to selectmen, the committee instead recommended the use of a small lot provided by TD Bank next to the Schoolhouse Road municipal lot.
“There is approximately 35 spaces in that particular area,” said Alexander Donoghue, the parking committee chairman. “The chamber will notify the Harwich Port businesses of this location.”
The lot would also include “Employee Parking” signs.
Selectmen approved the committee’s report, which also included “No Beach Parking” signs on the Route 28 side of Pleasant Street, along with universal parking signs at the entrances to the Schoolhouse Parking lot.
The committee also dropped an earlier recommendation to institute two-hour parking in the municipal parking lot in an effort to discourage beach parking. The committee said that enforcing the two-hour limit would be too hard to enforce.
Two local banks were also praised for their commitment to improve parking in the area.
“After 5 p.m., both Cape Cod Five and TD Bank have generously offered, in a partnership with this community, to allow parking in their specific lots,” Donoghue said.
The committee is also seeking parking data through periodic monitoring efforts from Recreation Department attendants.
The life of the ad hoc committee was extended by Selectmen to seek more long-term solutions for parking issues in Harwich Port.
