PROVINCETOWN – In a Cape Cod Thanksgiving Eve tradition, the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown will be lit tonight, signaling the start of the holiday season.
The annual lighting ceremony is traditionally held the night before Thanksgiving to commemorate the first landfall of the Pilgrims in the New World in Provincetown Harbor.
The lighting ceremony will honor Coast Guard Station Provincetown, and Robert Cabral, a Provincetown native, U.S. Navy veteran and longtime Provincetown business owner who passed away on November 3.
The lighting takes place from 5-7 p.m.
Admission is free, but attendees can make a donation to have part of the lighting be performed in the name of someone they choose.
The Monument will stay lit until January 6 to represent the five weeks that the Pilgrims spent in Provincetown Harbor on board the Mayflower before sailing to Plymouth.
