PROVINCETOWN – A feasibility study is underway to determine whether Provincetown would be a suitable location for a Stellwagen Bank visitor center.
In the spring, Provincetown voters approved $17,000 to be put towards the study, along with a matching grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The 842 square-mile underwater reserve is located off Race Point, and town officials believe a dedicated center to the sanctuary would help visitors better understand their surroundings.
“I think it would be a benefit not only to the tourism business, but to the ecology of Massachusetts to have an opportunity to educate visitors about the nature around them,” Provincetown Selectman Tom Donegan said.
No timeline on the project has been announced, and the results of the feasibility study are expected to be released later in the fall.
