Quashnet School Repairs to Go Before Mashpee Town Meeting Voters

MASHPEE – An article will go before voters at Mashpee Town Meeting this spring to approve a debt exclusion for renovations to the Quashnet Elementary School.

The work to replace windows and doors and repair the roof has an estimated price tag of $10.5 million.

Selectmen voted earlier this month to place the article on the warrant to help in its application for funding from the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

“I think it makes sense,” said Selectman Andrew Gottlieb. “We have a stronger presentation to send our team to the school building authority if we say we approved it and voted the article on to the warrant.”

Town Manager Rodney echoed the concerns of Gottlieb.

“I’m just concerned about getting to the back of the line,” Gottlieb said.

The building authority could reimburse the town up to 38 percent of the cost of the repairs.

The project, if approved at town meeting and the ballots, would be funded through a 20-year bond at a 5.8 percent interest rate. The property tax rate for residents would increase until the bond is paid off.
