BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts shoppers appear one step closer to another sales tax holiday.
A key legislative committee is recommending the state suspend collection of the 6.25 percent sales tax for the weekend of Aug. 15-16.
Senate Republican Leader Bruce Tarr has pushed for a permanent sales tax weekend each year, but said Wednesday that the bill to create a single sales tax weekend this year is important for consumers, retailers and the economy.
Democratic House Speaker Robert DeLeo said Monday that he expects lawmakers to act “relatively soon” on a bill.
DeLeo said he expects lawmakers to adopt another tax-free weekend, but said he and Senate President Stan Rosenberg have concerns about the loss of tax revenue.
Gov. Charlie Baker said the tax holiday is “something people have come to expect.”
